CHENGDU, China, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Top-ranked paddler Liu Shiwen avoided an early exit from the ITTF World Tour China Open, edging past Zeng Jian of Singapore in the women's singles quarterfinals 4-3 here on Saturday.

It was Liu's second consecutive seven-game matchup after overcoming Japanese Marina Matsuzawa on Friday. The world No. 1 won the game at 10-12, 6-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9, 11-5.

"Physically, I was not 100 percent. I planned to dominate the match from the start, but unfortunately, I found that I was not totally fit for the game," said Liu.

Facing a dilemma at 3-0 down, Liu decided to change her tactics for one more attempt to win.

"Then I changed the rhythm of the match, and I felt that I finally won with my experience," commented Liu.

Liu also felt the challenge from Japanese and Singaporean youngsters, especially tough matches against Matsuzawa and Zeng.

"It's normal. During a new Olympic span, many young talents always emerge and pose much challenge to us. For myself, it's important to keep improving, and not just rely on what I already have.

"Zeng is a tough opponent, and plays much aggressively at the beginning. Leading 3-0, she may think too much about the victory, so I need to come back into the game little by little," she said.

Wasting a three-game lead, Zeng could not hide her disappointment in the mixed zone.

"I just played to myself and tried to challenge the opponent in the opening three games, but I could not make a good response after she changed the tactics in the fourth," said the tournament's under-21 singles champion.

ARUSHA, Tanzania, Jan.27 (Xinhua) -- Drought has disrupted the normal migration wildebeests and zebras in northern Tanzania and forced them to give birth near the Tarangire River, an ecologist said Friday.

Tanzania is experiencing a drought after the short rainy season failed to deliver much-needed rainfall during recent months.

Derek Lee, an ecologist and scientist of the German-based Wild Nature Institute (WNI) said that the landscape across the Tarangire Ecosystem of northern Tanzania is now unseasonably dry, and where the ground would normally be a carpet of green, grasses and herbs are now in short supplies.

"Normally, at this time of year, the long-distance migratory wildlife like wildebeests and zebras would be on their calving grounds on the short-grass plains near Gelai and Simanjiro, far from the Tarangire River," the expert said in the report.

He, however, cited lack of water and food on the calving grounds has forced pregnant wildebeests and zebras to return early to Tarangire National Park to give birth, a disruption of their normal migratory behaviour with uncertain consequences.

According to the ecologist, the Tarangire Ecosystem is defined by the long-distance migration of wildebeests and zebras between their dry-season range along the Tarangire River in Tarangire National Park, and their wet-season calving grounds on the Northern Plains and Simanjiro Plains outside the park.

"The reason for the migration is that the greater nutritional content of the grasses on the calving grounds support lactation and calf growth, but the less nutritious grasses near the river do not. Wildlife migrations are an endangered phenomenon in the world and there are only three remaining wildebeest migrations in Africa.

"The Tarangire migration supports the Tarangire Ecosystem as an important source of wildlife tourism revenue for the country but the ecosystem is largely unprotected and the population of wildebeests has plummeted from 40,000 in the 1980s to only 7,000 today," he said.

"Conservationists fear this disruption could exacerbate the Tarangire wildebeest's already precarious situation, which is why Wild Nature Institute has prioritized protection of the Northern Plains migration route," Lee said.

"It remains to be seen whether the wildebeest calves now being born in Tarangire National Park will survive, given the poor forage quality there. If this year's crop of wildebeest calves is lost due to the drought, the population will have a harder time recovering from its already depleted numbers.

On the positive side, Dr. Lee said that the unusual presence of so much easy prey in Tarangire National Park is likely helping the lions and other predators that live there.

"Lion numbers have been steadily declining in Tarangire due to illegal killing when they leave the safety of the park," said the expert.

Giraffes too should see unseasonably high calf survival as the lions and hyenas concentrate their predation on wildebeests and zebras, said Lee.

The current drought situation highlights the interconnectedness of all parts of a functioning ecosystem, and how a natural disruption can push endangered w.
