BEIJING Camisola William Carvalho Portugal , April 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese people's disposable income expanded at a faster pace than economic growth in the first quarter of this year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Monday.

Per capita nominal disposable income of Chinese nationwide rose 8.5 percent in the first three months from a year ago, and per capita real disposable income after taking into consideration the effects of inflation increased 7 percent, outpacing the gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 6.9 percent in the period, NBS figures showed.

Breakdown figures showed that urban residents' per capita real disposable income grew 6.3 percent year on year in the first quarter to 9,986 yuan (about 1,452 U.S. dollars), while per capita disposable income of rural residents rose at a faster pace of 7.2 percent in the period to 3,880 yuan.

Other indicators released by the NBS on Monday, including fixed-asset investment and industrial production, pointed to stabilization in the world's second-largest economy.

NBS spokesperson Mao Shengyong said the economy had achieved a rosy start this year and the income gap between rural and urban residents narrowed, laying a solid foundation to realizing its full-year economic target.

The government trimmed this year's growth goal to around 6.5 percent from a range of 6.5 to 7 percent for 2016.

ROME, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Archaeological sites, palaces, gardens, castles, churches, theaters and archives across Italy were wide open during the weekend to what organizers of the FAI (Italian National Trust) Spring Days have defined as a "pacific invasion" of crowds of citizens.

The FAI Spring Days, this year at its 22th edition, was considered the largest festival dedicated to culture and environment in Italy. "Over the past years, we have had the growing support of people and institutions," the project manager of the event Elisa Pasqualetto told Xinhua.

In a country whose extraordinary heritage has suffered big damage because of frequent negligence and mismanagement - many parts of the UNESCO world heritage site of Pompeii have recently gone lost - citizens have increasingly realized the cultural importance as well as the economic value of historic treasures, she noted.

How to bring citizens closer to their country's natural and historic heritage and promote a tangible culture of respect? Making children and teenagers feel the "custodians" of national treasures was the right tool for arousing affection and responsibility in the society, Pasqualetto highlighted.

On Saturday and Sunday, some 7,000 volunteers of FAI and 22,000 students across a number of art cities in Italy were joining hands to lead guided tours, hold exhibitions and carry out all kinds of activities from cultural trails to bike rides in the 750 heritages sites open to visitors.

Vittoria Tuttobello, a 18-year-old language student, was spending the weekend illustrating to groups of tourists from all over the world the most beautiful monuments of her hometown, the city of Milan in northern Italy. "I am enthusiastic. For the first time, I have to answer the questions of people older than me about Milan's art and history," she told Xinhua.

"I prepared for the FAI Spring Days together with a group of friends. It was particularly pleasant to study things that I knew would be useful for a concrete experience. Otherwise I would probably not have deepened so much my knowledge of Milan," she said.

Tuttobello was part of FAI's "Apprendisti Ciceroni" (Guides in training) project involving more than 500 schools in Italy. The number of students taking part in the project has been soaring year after year, organizers said.

"Youngsters like it because it allows them to take a challenge, confront with a concrete task and also improve their language skills," the "Apprendisti Ciceroni" project responsible Cristina Marchini said. Furthermore, she added, the project also provides some more scores for the students' final exam at their schools.

"Older students are given more professional tasks, as they are asked to lead tourist groups around the heritage sites. Teenagers have the possibility to stage shows, while children are often given the role to stand still and depict a particular, for example a small section of a painting. The latter are particularly appreciated by visitors because they are naturally empathic," she explained to Xinhua.

The training of students was helped out by senior volunteers. On Saturday and Sunday, Silvia Pacces was participating in the FAI Spring Days for the 22th time. Pacces, 74, used to work in the publishing industry. "But being a volunteer at the service of my country's heritage has always been my most treasured job," she told Xinhua.

Young people, Pacces stressed, were the main strength to protect a legacy that Italian citizens must "have the dream to conserve and value."

BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- A century-old Chinese bank became the latest target of a tightening financial clean-up in the world's second largest economy.

China's banking regulator has fined Postal Savings Bank of China (PSBC), along with 11 other related banks, a total of 295 million yuan (about 46 million U.S. dollars) over a bill fraud case in the northwestern province of Gansu.

Probes into a PSBC sub-branch in Wuwei City in December found 7.9 billion yuan worth of bills were in.
